We drove past a wildlife preserve and sitting in the grass was this HUGE group of elk! I just about drove off the road rubber-necking them! It wasn't till we stopped at the viewpoint on the drive home that I realized they were all fenced into pastures. BIG letdown. I thought that I was seeing the ultimate herd grouping by the road in the wild! Well.. they were still neat to look at. Only got one picture before my camera battery died.** Turns out they aren't fenced in. These pastures are actually chutes that encourage grouping by the road as that is where the supplimental food and salts are put. It is only totally fenced by the road, so they can come and go as they please out the back side. So... COOL!**
