An Awesome Mess

Kaels birthday was the funnest disaster I could have hoped for. We had unofficially reserved an area at the park for his big day (were told by the parks and recs lady that that area was usually vacant and therefore we were free to fill it up!) but when I went down at 2 to set up for our 3 o-clock party.... .Um, No. The park was packed. Every 20-something in Bend was there. Not an inch of party space, not one parking spot. Crap. Thunder clouds were fast rolling in. Double Crap.

I drove home, plopped Kael in his crib and yelled out to Matt "Call everyone, we're having it here!"

I ushered him out of the house only minutes later. His chore was to gather everyone who was coming ( and who I wasn't able to get by phone) and herd them here. This means I had like 10 minutes MAX to get the house from "I've been getting ready all day, doing no chores, but no one's gonna see it anyway, right?" to "Oh my God, we're about to have GUESTS!!!"

Did my best flight-of-the-bumblebee cleaning job and the guests, they started coming.

The party went well, all things considered. The 120 water balloons we'd filled earlier in the day lasted MAYBE 3 minutes. The helium balloons I filled lasted much longer, but were greeted with less enthusiasm. My pathetic cupcakes were kind of burnt, but no one noticed/complained. Kael got some fun gifts and a bit of money to start his savings account. And things were so RUSHED that I never got a chance to get all nervous/twitchy/ashamed of my home. There just wasn't time. I HATE hosting things. Just not my bag, baby. But this wasn't so bad! It was actually a good lesson learned. We are where we're at for a reason, and that reason is a damn good one. I need to take pride in that rather then feel ashamed of the incidentals.

Pictures to come soon. I couldn't find my camera so am stealing the photos taken on Moms digital.

Happpy ALMOST birthday, Buddy!

You did just fine!
I did not see any mess/disaster of which you speak~
You were a very gracious host.
You did wonderful and hey you are just embarking on the kid party thing and you have many to follow in which to "perfect" the art. Trust me...there were things that I didn't do or forgot about for my nine year old's party! Each party is a new adventure and you just do your best.
Everyone I saw had a smile on their face and looked to be having a good time. Besides...it looked like to me that Kael was having a GREAT time and it was really about him anyway right?!
