Wow, you can really see the puffiness when you put the pictures side by side. Have you tried ice cream or cold foods?? Might be soothing. Or really warm broth?? Sometimes with face surgery patients at work lukewarm things are the hardest to swallow.

he thrwe up all icecream until last night, when he managed to keep 1 whole spoonfull down. BUT.. while I was in the shower today he ate several pieces of immitation crab.. very soft so no real chewing. He's pretty sure it's gonna stay down, too, so hopefully he's over the nausia. I think I'm gonna call the dentist tomorow and see about another prescription for something else. I've never seen him in this much pain. This even beats Migraines. He's on Percocet now, and it's not doing anything.

Are you serious!!?! He can't keep down ice cream, but he CAN keep down IMITATION CRAB?!??!

Ask the doctor about oxycodone (if the pain medicine works but is not strong enough--it is the same medication, but they can give you a bigger dose of it). If it is not working at all, ask about hydromorphone (dilaudid) Also, let them know that he is taking narcotics/has a history of taking narcotics. This is increasing his tolerance and will make hime need a higher dose than someone who has never taken narcotics. Also, give him tylenol every 4-6 hours (don't overdo what they recommend on the package). It will help with the swelling, which will decrease the pain. Sounds hokey to take tylenol when you are in such pain, but it can seriously help with the swelling, which is what hurts so much. Or, ask about toradol. That is what they gave you for your kidney stones. It is in the same family as tylenol, but much stronger. Actually, ask about that anyway. It is a non-narcotic, works GREAT, and they should try some non-narcotics along with narcotics. Call me if you have questions. We get similar pts here, and I have some experience with options.
